Extension updated — refresh the page
After a ZetaMarker extension update, refresh open tabs to restore highlighting. Fix orphan context errors without losing local highlights.
When the ZetaMarker extension updates or reloads while you keep a tab open, that tab's connection to the extension can break. Refreshing the page fixes it.
What you see
A persistent toast appears:
ZetaMarker was updated. Refresh this page and reactivate it to keep highlighting.Click Refresh on the toast, or reload the tab manually (F5 / Cmd+R).
The toast shows once per broken session and stays until you refresh.
Why it happens
Browser tabs keep the old extension "context" after an update. Messages between the page and the extension fail with errors like extension context invalidated or receiving end does not exist.
This is normal after:
- Automatic extension updates from the Chrome Web Store
- Manual reload of the extension on
chrome://extensions - Browser restart with stale tabs restored
Recovery steps
- Click Refresh on the toast (or reload the tab).
- Reactivate ZetaMarker — toolbar click or
Ctrl+Shift+K/Cmd+Shift+K. - Continue highlighting — local highlights from before the update remain saved.
PDF viewer
If the PDF viewer tab breaks separately, you may see Viewer refreshed. Go back to the original PDF tab and activate again. — see PDF viewer troubleshooting.
