One account per browser profile
Why the Chrome extension links each browser profile to one ZetaMarker account, and what to do if you see "Another user uses this device."
Each browser profile (for example, your normal Chrome profile) can sign in to one ZetaMarker account in the extension.
If you used account A on this profile before, signing in with account B is blocked. You may see:
Another user uses this device.
Why we do this
Local highlights on this device stay in your browser. Binding the profile to the first account that signed in helps prevent those highlights from being synced to someone else's cloud account by mistake.
This protects your reading notes on shared or personal computers.
Sign out does not switch accounts
Logging out of the extension pauses cloud sync but does not remove the link to the original account. You can sign back in with the same account anytime.
To use a different ZetaMarker account on this computer, use a separate browser profile (Chrome supports multiple profiles), or another browser.
What to do
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You want your usual account back | Sign in with the same email or Google account you used before |
| You want a different account here | Use another Chrome profile or browser |
| You see the message after trying a new account | Expected — see the rows above |
| You deleted your account and signed up again with the same email | Sign in again from the extension with the same email or Google account. See Delete your account — especially Signing up again and Extension after re-signup. Do not uninstall the extension. |
After deleting your account
If you delete your account and later create a new one with the same email, you are signing into a new account. Cloud data from the old account cannot be restored.
