Local pages manager
Browse, search, sort, and remove local highlight pages in the extension; manage Chrome storage quota from one place.
The Local pages manager lists every online page you have highlighted on this device (web URLs and online PDFs). Use it to review storage usage, find pages quickly, and remove local copies to free space.
Local file:// PDF uploads are not listed here — see Highlight local PDF files.
Open Local pages
From the sidebar (web pages)
- Open the ZetaMarker sidebar on any highlighted web page.
- Click the layers icon in the top toolbar — tooltip Local pages.
From the PDF viewer
The PDF toolbar includes the same Local pages (layers) button.
From storage warnings
When Chrome local storage is almost full or a save fails, choose Manage storage in the modal or toast. This opens Local pages with the storage warning visible. See Browser storage limits.
Storage meter
At the top of the manager:
- Storage label with MB used / 10 MB quota and percentage
- Progress bar (normal, warning at 80%, critical near full)
- Banner when usage is high: Storage almost full — remove local copies of synced pages to free space.
The meter reflects total chrome.storage.local usage for the extension, not just the pages in the table.
Page list
Each row shows:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Page | Title and URL |
| Highlights | Count of active highlights on that page |
| Sync | Status badge (see below) |
| Updated | Last change date |
| Actions | Open page in browser, remove local copy |
The list scrolls with the page. Large libraries use efficient rendering so performance stays smooth.
Search
Use the search field to filter pages by:
- Page title
- URL
- Page notes
- Highlight text and comments
Tips:
- Search is case-insensitive.
- Multiple words must all match (AND logic) — e.g.
react hooksfinds pages containing both terms. - Results update shortly after you stop typing.
Sort and filter
Sort
| Option | Order |
|---|---|
| Last updated ↓ | Newest activity first (default) |
| Last updated ↑ | Oldest first |
| Highlights ↓ | Most highlights first |
| Title A–Z | Alphabetical by title |
Filter
| Filter | Shows |
|---|---|
| All | Every local online page |
| Synced | Fully synced to your account |
| Pending sync | Unsaved changes waiting to sync |
| Not synced | Never synced, with at least one highlight |
| Local only | No cloud page ID (logged in or not) |
| In trash | Pages marked in trash locally |
Select and bulk actions
- Check individual rows, or use the header checkbox to select all pages matching the current search and filter.
- When one page is selected: Open page, Open in app (synced + signed in), Remove selected.
- When several are selected: Remove selected removes all chosen local copies.
If every selected page is fully synced, a hint explains that removing local copies frees space without losing cloud data.
Remove local copy
Remove local copy deletes highlight data from Chrome local storage on this device only.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Synced page | Cloud copy remains; page can be re-cached on next visit |
| Unsynced changes | Confirmation warns that unsynced data will be lost |
| Page in trash locally | Local copy can be removed; see Pages in Trash |
This does not delete pages from your web dashboard. Use Trash in the dashboard for cloud deletion.
Sync status badges
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Local only | No cloud page ID stored |
| Pending sync | Local edits not yet synced |
| Synced | Cloud page ID and sync timestamp present |
| In trash | Page marked in trash in local storage |
Status is derived from stored data, not from whether you are currently signed in.
Freeing storage — recommended steps
- Open Local pages via Manage storage or the sidebar icon.
- Filter by Synced and sort by Last updated to find old pages you no longer need offline.
- Select synced pages and Remove selected to free local space.
- Sign in and sync so important highlights are backed up before removing local copies.
