Google Drive and Google Docs
Why inline highlighting is not supported on Google Drive or Google Docs, and how to upload PDFs to the dashboard instead.
ZetaMarker cannot highlight directly inside Google Drive or Google Docs in the browser. Activating the extension on those sites shows an explanation page with steps to use the dashboard instead.
Why it is not supported
Drive and Docs use complex web apps that block the extension's highlighting layer. ZetaMarker redirects those tabs to an in-extension prompt rather than failing silently.
What happens when you activate
- You open a Drive or Docs URL.
- You click the ZetaMarker icon or press
Ctrl+Shift+K/Cmd+Shift+K. - The tab shows Google Drive and Google Docs aren't supported in the extension.
The prompt explains the limitation and recommends uploading PDFs in the web app.
Recommended workflow for PDFs
- Download the PDF from Google Drive to your computer (if needed).
- Click Open ZetaMarker to upload on the prompt page, or go to /app?upload=pdf.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Upload the PDF and highlight it in the dashboard PDF viewer or re-open it in the extension after it is stored in your library.
Open in app on Drive/Docs tabs also opens the upload flow (/?zm_source=google-drive-docs-prompt), not a specific page.
Other options on the prompt page
- Go back — return to the previous page or close the tab.
- Copy page link — copy the original Drive/Docs URL to your clipboard.
Important
Highlights from other websites are not shown when you view a file inside Drive or Docs. Upload the PDF to ZetaMarker for a dedicated copy with your highlights.
